Canon Digital SLR

Extensive service adjustments now available for the following Canon EOS models:

  • Canon EOS 10D, 20D, 30D, 40D
  • Canon EOS Rebel/300D
  • Canon EOS XS/1000D, Canon EIS XSi/450D
  • Canon EOS XT/350D, Canon EOS XTi/400D

Using specialized service adjustment software sold by SPT (Society of Photo-Technologists International) for all of the above Canon EOS models, I can:

  • Print camera data which includes the current shutter and mirror shot counts.
  • Read and change the shutter count.
  • Adjust the shutter speeds.
  • Read, diagnose and clear the internal error codes.

On the more advanced Canon EOS models included in the list above, I can do the following:

  • Calibrate Autoexposure
    • Read the AE Cell's EV output.
    • Adjust the AE Cell.
    • Adjust AE Exposure
  • Calibrate the Shutter
    • Read and adjust shutter value.
    • Read and adjust X Contact timing.
  • Calibrate Autofocus
    • Check AF Sensor Output.
    • Check AF Sensors for dust.
    • Calibrate Body Autofocus.
    • Calibrate Lens Autofocus.

Why are these service adjustments important to you and your Canon DSLR?

First, let me explain that the manufacturers of digital cameras will not allow independent camera technicians to purchase Service Adjustment Software for their respective camera models. Therefore, the organization that most of us belong to, SPT (Society of Photo-Technologists), has produced its own software written by and for technicians. Currently, SPT has software for just the digital Canon EOS models  listed on the previous page. As software becomes available for more camera brands (such as Nikon), I will update this website so visitors will know on which digital cameras I can make service adjustments.

Using SPT's specialized software, I can tell you your Canon DSLR's shutter count. This is important because digital cameras are manufactured to have a certain number of shutter releases (typically 100,000 to 120,000). When this number is reached, the camera stops working properly. If you know ahead of time that the shutter count is approaching the maximum allowed, you can choose to replace the shutter before causing damage to the camera. The shutter count will then start over.

I can also diagnose and clear internal error codes from your camera. The ubiquitous "Err 99" that the camera displays can actually relate to up to 44 different internal error codes. With the software, I can determine exactly what the problem is, and, in most cases, I can fix the problem or tell you what has to be done to fix it. Once the problem is known and taken care of, clearing the internal error code will give you a clean platform for your camera to continue on.

Frequently, after being worked on, a camera's shutter speeds need adjusting. The specialized software very easily makes that possible.

Autoexposure Calibration: Is there an exposure problem related to the lightmeter? I can check each cell of the AE Matrix and know if the problem starts at the photocell. Even if the cell is good, exposure is frequently off by ½ stop or more. With the software, I can adjust it in a few minutes.

Shutter Calibration: Frequently, when the shutter is replaced, the high speeds have no slit. Fortunately, the software lets me adjust the speeds quickly. If there is a problem with the X Contact timing (X delay), I can adjust that, also.

Autofocus Calibration: The SPT software exceeds factory standards in autofocus calibration by providing a focus measurement tool for definitive down-to-the-millimeter focus point tests. It also allows me to download and save the camera's original AF data separately so that I can always return to the starting point when testing and adjusting. I can also provide before and after screen shots so you can see the change after the adjustment.
